Cada ciclo de trabajo consiste en admisi\u00f3n, compresi\u00f3n, potencia y escape en un motor de cuatro tiempos. Sin embargo, debido a que el combustible utilizado en los motores di\u00e9sel es el di\u00e9sel, cuya viscosidad es mayor que la de la gasolina y que es m\u00e1s dif\u00edcil de evaporar, mientras que su temperatura de autoignici\u00f3n es m\u00e1s baja que la de la gasolina, la formaci\u00f3n de la mezcla combustible y la ignici\u00f3n se producen de manera diferente a como ocurre en los motores de gasolina.<br \/>\nEn la carrera de admisi\u00f3n, el motor di\u00e9sel aspira aire puro. Hacia el final de la carrera de compresi\u00f3n, la bomba de inyecci\u00f3n de combustible di\u00e9sel, impulsada por una presi\u00f3n de aceite de 10 MPa o m\u00e1s, pulveriza el combustible a trav\u00e9s de los inyectores dentro del cilindro, donde se mezcla en un tiempo muy breve con el aire caliente comprimido para formar la mezcla combustible. Dado que la relaci\u00f3n de compresi\u00f3n del motor di\u00e9sel suele ser de 16 a 22, al final de la carrera de compresi\u00f3n la presi\u00f3n del aire comprimido en el cilindro alcanza los 3,5 a 4,5 MPa y la temperatura llega a los 750 a 1000 K; en ese momento, la presi\u00f3n del aire es de 0,6 a 1,2 MPa y la temperatura alcanza los 600 a 700 K, lo que supera ampliamente la temperatura de ignici\u00f3n del combustible di\u00e9sel; por lo tanto, cuando el di\u00e9sel se inyecta en el cilindro, se mezcla con el aire y, en un tiempo muy breve, se produce la combusti\u00f3n por autoignici\u00f3n. La presi\u00f3n en el cilindro alcanza los 6 a 9 MPa y la temperatura se eleva r\u00e1pidamente a 2000 a 2500 K, lo que impulsa el movimiento descendente del pist\u00f3n y la rotaci\u00f3n del cig\u00fce\u00f1al para generar potencia; al mismo tiempo, los gases de escape se expulsan a la atm\u00f3sfera a trav\u00e9s del tubo de escape.<br \/>\nEn un motor di\u00e9sel convencional, el combustible di\u00e9sel se inyecta en la c\u00e1mara de cada cilindro mediante una bomba de alta presi\u00f3n accionada por el eje de levas del motor. Este m\u00e9todo de inyecci\u00f3n var\u00eda seg\u00fan los cambios en la velocidad del motor, por lo que no permite un suministro \u00f3ptimo de combustible a diferentes velocidades. Sin embargo, los sistemas de inyecci\u00f3n di\u00e9sel de riel com\u00fan con control electr\u00f3nico, cada vez m\u00e1s utilizados, pueden resolver mejor este problema.<br \/>\nEl sistema de inyecci\u00f3n Common Rail est\u00e1 compuesto por una bomba de suministro de combustible de alta presi\u00f3n, una tuber\u00eda com\u00fan, inyectores, una unidad de control electr\u00f3nico (ECU) y algunos sensores de presi\u00f3n en las tuber\u00edas; en este sistema, cada inyector est\u00e1 conectado a la tuber\u00eda com\u00fan a trav\u00e9s de su tuber\u00eda de alta presi\u00f3n, y la tuber\u00eda com\u00fan act\u00faa como un acumulador hidr\u00e1ulico para los inyectores. El funcionamiento consiste en que la bomba de combustible de alta presi\u00f3n suministra combustible a alta presi\u00f3n a la tuber\u00eda com\u00fan; el sistema funciona en un circuito cerrado compuesto por la bomba de alta presi\u00f3n, los sensores de presi\u00f3n y la ECU, lo que permite lograr un control hidr\u00e1ulico preciso dentro de la tuber\u00eda com\u00fan y elimina por completo el fen\u00f3meno de que la presi\u00f3n del aceite var\u00ede con las variaciones en la velocidad del motor. Sus caracter\u00edsticas principales son las siguientes tres aspectos:<br \/>\n1. La sincronizaci\u00f3n de la inyecci\u00f3n y la dosificaci\u00f3n de combustible son completamente independientes del control de la presi\u00f3n y el tiempo de inyecci\u00f3n de combustible que realiza la ECU en el proceso de inyecci\u00f3n de combustible.<br \/>\n2 puede basarse en las condiciones de funcionamiento del motor para ajustar la presi\u00f3n de inyecci\u00f3n de combustible en los cilindros y el punto de inicio de la inyecci\u00f3n, as\u00ed como el tiempo de duraci\u00f3n de la misma, con el fin de lograr los mejores par\u00e1metros de control de la inyecci\u00f3n de combustible.<br \/>\n3 puede alcanzar una alta presi\u00f3n de inyecci\u00f3n y permite realizar la preinyecci\u00f3n de di\u00e9sel.<br \/>\nEn comparaci\u00f3n con los motores de gasolina, los motores di\u00e9sel tienen un bajo consumo de combustible (en promedio un 30% menor que el de la gasolina) y los precios del di\u00e9sel son bajos, por lo que la econom\u00eda de combustible es mejor; aunque la velocidad del motor es, en general, mucho menor que la del motor de gasolina, el par motor es mayor que el de la gasolina, pero su funcionamiento es m\u00e1s pesado y ruidoso, y los costos de fabricaci\u00f3n y mantenimiento son m\u00e1s elevados, mientras que las emisiones son peores que las de la gasolina.
