Oleh karena itu, penggunaan mesin diesel semakin meluas, dan jumlahnya terus meningkat. Sementara itu, persyaratan terkait kinerja daya mesin, efisiensi ekonomi, emisi gas buang, dan pengendalian polusi suara juga semakin ketat. Mengandalkan sistem injeksi bahan bakar dengan kontrol mekanis tradisional sudah tidak mampu memenuhi persyaratan tersebut; sulit untuk mencapai volume injeksi, tekanan injeksi, dan waktu injeksi yang tepat sesuai dengan tuntutan kondisi optimal. Dalam beberapa tahun terakhir, seiring perkembangan pesat teknologi komputer, teknologi sensor, dan teknologi informasi, keandalan produk elektronik, biaya, ukuran, serta aspek-aspek lainnya kini dapat memenuhi persyaratan kontrol elektronik mesin diesel, sehingga sistem injeksi bahan bakar yang dikendalikan secara elektronik menjadi sangat mudah untuk diterapkan.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Faktanya, emisi CO dan HC pada gas buang diesel jauh lebih rendah daripada bensin; emisi NOx pada diesel dan bensin memang serupa, namun partikel gas buang pada diesel lebih banyak\u2014hal ini disebabkan oleh mekanisme pembakaran mesin diesel. Pembakaran pada mesin diesel bersifat non-homogen; waktu pembentukan campuran bahan bakar sangat singkat, dan proses pembentukan campuran bahan bakar serta proses pembakaran saling terkait. Berdasarkan analisis hukum injeksi bahan bakar mesin diesel: atomisasi bahan bakar yang disuntikkan ke dalam kualitas aliran gas di dalam silinder dan bentuk ruang bakar secara langsung memengaruhi jalannya proses pembakaran serta pembentukan emisi berbahaya. Dengan meningkatkan tekanan injeksi bahan bakar diesel dan kualitas atomisasinya, serta penerapan teknik seperti injeksi awal (pre-injection) dan sub-jet, emisi dapat ditekan secara efektif.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Setelah bertahun-tahun melakukan penelitian dan penerapan teknologi baru, mesin diesel kini telah jauh berbeda dari kondisi sebelumnya. Mesin diesel modern umumnya menggunakan sistem injeksi dengan kontrol elektronik canggih, common rail bertekanan tinggi, serta teknologi turbo-pendingin; sehingga dalam hal bobot, kebisingan, asap, dan sebagainya telah mencapai terobosan besar, setara dengan mesin bensin. Dengan semakin ketatnya standar pengendalian emisi internasional (misalnya standar Eropa IV dan V) yang telah ditetapkan dan diterapkan, baik mesin bensin maupun mesin diesel kini menghadapi tantangan serius. Salah satu solusinya adalah dengan menggunakan teknologi injeksi bahan bakar yang dikendalikan secara elektronik.
